New finds in Perperikon

Perperikon is situated in the East Rhodopi, 15 km North-East from the city of Kardjali. You can reach out for this place from Sofia by using the well supported roads Sofia – Asenovgrad – Kardjali and Sofia – Haskovo – Kardjali. The gold-bearing river Perpereshka flows near it. A water-mountain resort is built around this place.After the three-month excavations new unique finds attract the tourists to Perperikon. After three years working the whole west part of the acropolis of Perperikon was found. In this part of the terrain tens of altars from the II – I millennium B.C. have been revealed. They are covered with clay and are burned from the ritual fires that had been burning in the past. Circle outfits which presented the temples from this age have been found.The archeologists came upon magnificent ceramics with numerous images of the sun, splendid floral – geometrical decorations. The most interesting from this year’s excavations are from the period III-V c. B.C. when Perperikon turned into an enormous city. They proved that the population in this age was more than tens of thousands people. The acropolis of Perperikon is an extremely strengthened fortress.The workers also found a well-preserved quarter of 20 buildings around two meters high. It is already clear that in III – V century Perperikon was a beautiful city with temples, representative buildings and palaces.Another big discovery this year is a Middle Age complex, which is situated in the South – West corner of the acropolis, close to the tall tower, which is one of the symbols of Perperikon. In this complex was the residency of the governer of Perperikon in that period. This finding is of great importance, because it shows the appearance of Perperikon in XIII – XIV century, when Bulgaria made several wars against Byzantium for the city.Perperikon turns into a main tour attraction in our country and draws the attention of thousands of visitors every day. Perperikon is a place where as if the time has stopped. You have to see it! |
